O HAI THERE

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 27, 2010, 6:03 AM
I've been entirely too absent from DA.  I just uploaded a bunch of stuff I've been doing recently, and hopefully more will come soon (though not that soon  :()  I am open for coloring commissions still if anyone's interested.  Hit me up with a note or email if you'd like a quote on something.  I've kind of taken a break from doing anything the last two weeks, because between my full-time job and cramming EVERY day to get stuff done for my portfolio, so I could show it around at MegaCon, I was burnt.  I've been itching to get back to coloring though, so I'll be starting on some stuff again on Monday, and probably be grinding full time again until Heroes-Con.

AVATAR Review

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 18, 2009, 7:12 PM
You know what, I feel like giving my honest opinion on this one dammit.  You don't have to read this, but I'm putting it up here anyway.  Why?  Because I feel it is important for this movie to be successful.  Not only because of my enjoyment for it, but because it was a significant investment, and chances are if this fails, it'll be a long time before we get any studios taking a chance on something that was this costly again.

Ok, so I told you I'd give you my honest opinion, and here it is.  The story is mind-bogglingly generic.  The characters are not very developed past their templates, so there's not a lot to grab on to emotionally with them.  There is some, but not a lot.  It's never bad, but it does fail to reach something good at the same time.  It just feels like Cameron was playing it VERY safe with the story on this one, which doesn't make a lot of sense, given how much risk he took, and how much of himself he injected into everything else.  I'd be lying if I said I didn't want more, because honestly, I expected a little more from him.  He's never been a brilliant storyteller, but he's also never been this lazy with it.

That being said, I LOVED IT.  The world he has created here is absolutely incredible.  You have never in your life seen a movie like this, and probably will never again.  The effects are FLAWLESSLY integrated with the live action stuff, and everything looks real.  He actually delivered on his promise with that regard.  While the characters are bland, ALL of the actors have brought their A-game, so the performances are top notch, and they do inject emotion into the story and characters.  There is SO MUCH detail put into EVERYTHING on screen, it sucks you in.........HARD.  The most impressive thing to me was that they nailed ALL the facial animation and they eyes have life in them.  They're not the dead children of the corn eyes you see in stuff like The Polar Express.  For all intents and purposes though, the moon, Pandora, is a completely realized world, full of life and rich with history.  It's a 2 hour, 40 minute movie that feels like a solid 2 hours.  There are several scenes that made my jaw drop, and a few that I actually said "WOW" out loud to.  The 3D is not gimmicky in the least.  There is never a single "jump out at you from the screen" effect, it's all used to immerse you and give depth of field.  It didn't hurt my eyes at all, and if this is how 3D is used in the future, it should be used for EVERY movie.  Yeah.

So, the big question, should YOU go see it?  Honestly, I think you'd be cheating yourself if you didn't.  It's a real treat.  If you can get past the simple story on GI Joe (like I did), you can probably get past this one.  If you have an IMAX theatre playing it in 3D near you, it's absolutely mandatory that you go see it there.  No questions about it.  3D viewing is a MUST if you don't have IMAX near you, as most larger theatres have that Real-D technology now.  It is THE most visually stunning movie I have ever seen in my entire life.  I will be going to see it again, and I will be taking another trip into the city to see it in IMAX 3D.  If I rated this movie on visuals alone, it'd get a perfect on any scoring system you'd like me to use.  Because of the story, I felt he need to deduct two points though, so I'll give it an 8/10.

I don't know about you all, but this has been my MOST anticipated movie of the last 4 years.  I've been following the production of this (well, as much as I could, it's been kept under some pretty impressively tight wraps) since it was finally announced that Cameron was going to make it.  Finally James Cameron is returning to the big screen, with a massive sci-fi epic no less.  A lot of hoopla has been surrounding the fact that this movie is like 85-90% CG, all being hyped by Cameron himself as being photorealistic, but the first trailer was met with lackluster reception.  It also didn't put the images into any sort of context, as it was just a teaser.  This new preview is 3 and a half minutes long and gives you a nice glimpse at the overall story and a lot of the incredible visuals.  While some of it may not seem photoreal as promised (you will need to wrap your head around some 10 foot tall blue skinned aliens), A LOT of it does, and they are EASILY the most impressive visuals I have ever seen created for film.  When coupled with 3D, this should be a real treat.  I know I'll be there opening day in IMAX 3D.

FULL TRAILER: [link] (HD is linked below embedded trailer)

Also, does anyone else agree with me that 3D is getting a bad rap from most people?  I personally love it, and have found the films that aren't using it as a gimmick (mainly the pixar films and a couple others), but instead using it to enhance a film, are more enjoyable with it.  To me the added depth it gives you feels like I'm actually there IN the movie, as opposed to watching it on a screen.  It just immerses me more.

I didn't make it to the finalists with my entry for the Alvin Lee Street Fighter contest ([link] of expected, but kind of a bummer, because I feel (and so did a few others I've talked to......who may have been kissing my ass, but I like to hope not) that my piece was better than some of the ones picked.  There were quite a few runner-ups that were better than mine and the finalists too.  It all boils down to opinions though, and everyone's got a different one.  ANYWAY, go to the link and check out the finalists, and cast a vote if you see one you like!

In other news, I finished up my last pending commission.  I've got a piece I'm doing for a friend, then a last one to go with an original piece I'll be selling, then sequential practice!  Other than that, I'm gonna go get some sleep, I'm fried.

I was browsing through some older stuff, and came across the file of the first piece I ever colored digitally.  The save was dated two years ago today.  Kinda freaky that two years ago today I finished that piece.  I remember working on it for almost a month or so in my free time.  Now I'd probably finish it in like 5-6 hours (of actual work time spaced out over a week, lol), and it'd look a billion times better. I doubt I'll post it, because it's friggin terrible.

In other news, I finished up my Alvin Lee Street Fighter contest piece.  You can see that here, and a version without the line art on my blog, which I just renamed "A Peek Behind the Lines" [link] for self explanatory reasons :p

I'm still plugging away on this contest piece, but I'm ahead of schedule as of right now!  By a few days actually.  I'm sure something will come up to balance that out, but I'm feeling really good about it.  Anyway, I've got a few items up for sale on eBay if anyone's interested.  A couple statues and a few pieces of art along with my color versions.  Don't hesitate to make an offer on something if you like it, I NEED to buy myself a color calibration tool for my monitors and I'd LIKE to upgrade my tablet.

I've been plugging away on pieces lately, and also beginning to find a balance with spending time with people.  Part of that has to do with the fact that they are starting to see how serious I am about my work and they're not hounding me as much.  I don't mind sharing some of my free time, but you can't have all of it.  I'm working on a piece for a contest right now, and I have 2 commissions right after that to take care of.  I also finally picked up a battery backup unit for my PC and I'm being more aware of how often I save.  I also got a new desk, which allowed me to re-arrange my whole workstation.  This is a BIG deal, because it hasn't changed it's layout in at least 5 years.  That was way back when I was a slacker and mostly used it for internet surfing and video gaming.  This new layout is setup with working at my system in mind, all my tools are within an arms reach, and it's opened up, so I can see a bunch of framed pieces in my art collection, which inspire me to do better.  I feel more efficient sitting here while I work.

It's probably gonna be a bit before I post again, just because I'm taking all the time I can on this contest piece (which I don't know if I can show before the results, when it's finished) before it's due.  The next commission should be the next piece I post, but that's probably at least 3 weeks away.

Why doesn't photoshop have an auto-save option?

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 14, 2009, 3:23 PM
something you can enable for each document, have it save every 5-10 mins.

And much more importantly, WHY ARE THERE STILL MINI BLACKOUTS IN TWO THOUSAND AND FUCKING NINE?!?!?!
You know, those little blackouts that last for 5 minutes or so?  WHY THE FUCK ARE THOSE STILL AROUND?!?!
And why have I been hit twice in the last 24 hours (both times while working) with that bullshit?!?

I mean, seriously, someone successfully invented Wireless Electricity. [link]

If that's possible, why can't we control shit at power plants enough to prevent the mini-blackouts?

Sorry for the rant, I know I've been gone a bit.  I'll have a less anger fueled post soon.

Journal Entry: Thu May 28, 2009, 7:04 PM
I know I've been missing for a while.  I had some family issues to deal with, not problems so much on my part, just a lot of stuff I had to help my family with.  Family always comes first too.  Anyway, everything's been sorted out and is getting back to normal, in some ways better too.  I've been working on a few things and doing a lot of drawing practice to in addition to the coloring.  I'm getting better at it too, but still not good enough that I want to post anywhere yet.  Maybe soon though, we'll see.  I have a couple piece I'm coloring though which should be finished in the next couple weeks and I hope to get back to posting on a semi-regular basis.

I also have to give a shout out to :iconalex0wens:.  He did these two commissions for me which are simply awesome and I ordered a bunch more stuff from him.  If you're looking to get some stuff drawn, check out his gallery and hit him up for something.  He's got awesome rates and immense talent!

If you're interested in seeing some progress shots of stuff I work on, please follow my blog, [link]

I wind up posting there more often, especially since I'm only putting finished pieces here on DA.  I think I'm gonna go to bed now, I'm exhausted.

I'm posting a poll to go with this Journal.  I'm trying to get an idea if anyone would be interested in a raffle for a coloring commission by me.  Depending on the success I may do more, but as far as how it would work, I'm thinking probably $3/entry.  You'd send me a note, letting me know you're interested and I'll send you my paypal address.  Once you send me the money, your name goes on a list.  Whenever I stop accepting entries (I'm thinking about a week or two for the entry time), I'll take all the names, toss them in a bowl on seperate pieces of paper, and randomly pick one.  The winner will be able to have any piece you want (up to 2 characters with a background, absolutely NO porn of any kind, tasteful nudity is ok though) digitally colored by me and you'll get a print of the final piece sent to you.  You'll get a FULL color commission for only $3 if you win!  If you don't, you're only out $3.  That's less than a lunch these days.  Please let me know if you'd be interested in something like this in the poll I'm posting.  If there's enough interest I'll do it, and maybe some future ones.

I finally finished a piece I've been working on for a while.  It's only been about a month or so, but it feels like so much longer.  It's the Gambit and Rogue piece by Brian Ching in my gallery.  It's a fairly accurate sample of the type of work I'll be offering with the hand colored pieces.  I've finalized the pricing with those too, let me know if you're interested:

Hand Colored Pieces:
Colored with Copic Markers (with possibly some watercolor or ink thrown in if I feel the need for it)
You provide the lineart.   You send me a scan which I'll print onto comic art board OR I can color the original piece.

Single Character - Full Body, No Background - $50
Simple Background - Add $25
Complex Background - Add $50
Additional Characters - $45 each

11x14 OR 11x17

Simple Background - Add $30
Complex Background - Add $65

Shipping will be $10 anywhere in the USA and $25 anywhere else.  Turn around times will most likely be 4-6 weeks, but can vary depending on the piece and my workload.

Send me a scan or whatever you want colored and I'll give you a quote.  I will color bust shots and half body shots too.

I just got back from seeing Watchmen.  HOLY SHIT.  IT IS FANTASTIC.  I've seen a bunch of reviews, a lot mixed, some negative, and a couple positive.  I haven't actually read the reviews because I wanted to go in without any biased opinions.  I've read the book twice now, although it's been a while.  I noticed a few changes, mostly minor stuff, for the better though.  Not so much better from the story, just better to make the transition from comic to film.  The biggest change was the ending, I'm not going to spoil the details, but I will say that the message is still there, intact, as it was intended.  I don't think the change was necessary, as I feel that the original ending from the comic would have worked wonderfully, but this does tie back into itself nicely and brings a nice closure to the film.  The action is incredible, and it does contain some of Zack Snyder's trademark visual cues, such as the slow-mo/fast-mo stuff, but it never felt over done.  It always added an extra flare to the scene.  The action was brutal also.  When people get hit you FEEL it.  I highly recommend this to anyone who can sit through a movie without worrying about the runtime and I cannot wait to see what the upcoming Director's Cut does with the film.
