Description

UPDATE 4/14/09: I kept looking at this and wasn't REALLY satisfied. I made a few more changes, most noticeably the buildings are darker towards their tops which makes more sense, and the blue on spidey is more blue. There are a few other tweaks, but I think I'm done with this one.

UPDATE 4/8/09: I made a bunch of changes, including ones that Fatboy73 suggested. I think it looks better overall now and Spidey pops a bit more.

Apparently both the artist, :iconspacefriend-krunk: and I have something in common here. This was both our first Spidey piece. I've never digitally colored him before and this was Zach's first time drawing him. I really dig the perspective on this one. I just came across it while favorite surfing here yesterday and wanted to color it. I wanted to keep the buildings simple and just give everything a warm night time city glow. I think it turned out pretty good. I'd be interested to hear some thoughts on it, so I'm gonna try out this new critique feature. Keep in mind I only did the colors, as usual.

Chris,
here's my two cents of euros, now. Since the city lights are underneath Spidey, I would represent that, by creating a glow around him, not " eating " the line of him, but definitely covering the line art for the city. make a selection around his line art. inverse the selection to have the rest of the image selected but him, throw a gradient ' circular ' starting from his chest and spreading around, covering the city line art and color - create a layer just for that, btw, properties should be "hard light". This will make him pop out instantly, creating a sense of distance. you are actually kind of representing the reflection of the citylights on his back! like reverberating.
This also works to suggest oxygen in a landscape - mountains are always in faded colors, weather it's clear sunny day, night time or stormy weather. i made a simulation I'd like to send you, so you can see. drop me an email at frenchbulldogstudio@hotmail.com so I can send it to you. it took me two minutes, to do it roughly, agreed, but you shouldn't spent too much time either. that would definitely make your Spidey be the center of the attention, instead of having him blended with the city.

PS: I also inversed the selection, once I was done with the gradient FX, went on the color layer - for Spidey - to lighten up the whole character with CTRL+ L - yeah, PC... I know.
